Cornerstone was founded in 1993 by the late C. Molton Williams along with area business and community leaders.
Seeking to intervene in the cycle of poverty, which is perpetuated by a lack of access to quality education, these leaders established Cornerstone in the Woodlawn neighborhood of Birmingham, where great need is being met with the efforts of talented, certified faculty and staff. Today, the school enrolls approximately 220 children from across the city and offers a supportive environment focused on student achievement. The current Executive Director is Dr. Nita Thompson, who brings deep experience in education and administration to the life and work of the community.
Cornerstone students, in grades K4-8, are provided with a challenging curriculum within the context of biblically-centered spiritual formation in order to prepare them for excellence in high school and college.
Our commitment to academic success, development in the fine arts, faith-based character building, and service ensures that students will be ready to contribute to meaningful change in the broader urban community.
Cornerstone achieves this mission by
- Expecting effective leadership and the very highest quality faculty
- Focusing on and regularly measuring student progress and learning
- Guiding students with the help of volunteer mentors and tutors
- Maintaining order and discipline within the school and its students' lives by replacing misbehavior with achievement opportunities
- Developing the financial and physical resources to meet the school's needs and expand its reach in Birmingham
