We hope that you take the time to look through our website to see what an exceptional community has been built here in Woodlawn. At Cornerstone, we are training students who will contribute to the renewal and growth of Birmingham in the 21st century, providing an education of the very highest quality within the framework of Christian teachings and principles.
Progress and Achievement for a Changing Society
As globalization continues to expose American society to broader and more complex economic, cultural, and social currents, it has become more crucial than ever that our children are given access to a top-notch education. This should be the case for students across demographic and socioeconomic boundaries - it will take every corner of our community to answer the problems and engineer the solutions of our time. To ensure that students in the inner-city are given the opportunity to contribute to our city's and nation's growth, Cornerstone reaches out to inner-city Birmingham and provides an environment for measured progress and academic achievement.
Focused and regular testing are essential to this process. Students sit for formative and evaluative tests that make sure no student is left behind and that each one performs at or above grade level. In the classroom, our teachers - all of whom are certified by the Alabama Department of Education - are given the chance to work closely with students because of our low student/faculty ratio. In grades K5 through 6, for example, students spend at least 20-30 minutes each day working in groups of three with a faculty member on reading comprehension skills, a level of attention that is rarely possible at larger schools.
Biblical Training and Spiritual Guidance
As students grow and are confronted with new challenges, ethical and otherwise, Cornerstone provides a grounding in the Bible that allows them to live in the fullness of faith. As an ACSI- (Association of Christian Schools International) accredited school, Cornerstone guarantees families that each student will participate in daily study of the Bible. In every homeroom, students begin the day with a devotion that affirms their beliefs and teaches them the practicalities of living it out. On Wednesday, students attend chapel in one of two services, where they hear guest speakers from the community or a brief talk from a local minister.
Spiritual life is more, though, than the practice of spiritual disciplines. Our faculty and staff are committed to incorporating the truths of Christianity into the curriculum - students approach learning as a way not only to excel and achieve, but also to more closely know and love the God who made them. With the help of volunteer mentors from the community, students know that they are loved and are given the chance to speak about what concerns them most.
There is much more to know about Cornerstone than can be said here. For initial inquiries into the admissions process, or if you have further questions about the life and work of the school, please call our main office at (205) 591-7600, or e-mail Jane Brock at jbrock@csalabama.org
